It’s Friday and I want to have a little fun. I’m actually late with this post. The idea came when a friend of mine called to reminisce about the great music in the 90s. They don’t make R&B now the way they did in the back then. I mean, I appreciate Trey Songz and all, but homeboy ain’t got nothing on the men who made women swoon at the end of the last century.
So, to pay homage to my favorite decade, I’m listing some of the best love songs from the 90’s. And I’m not just thinking love songs that were sweet, I’m thinking of the songs that all you need to hear are the first chords and you still raise your hand, say “Alright now!” and lose yourself to the memories of good times.
Here’s my list, in no particular order.
1. Jodeci: Feenin. So many Jodeci songs can go on this list, but I picked this one because I still use this word! This song takes all of the passion, yearning and frustration you hold for that one person and ties it up nicely in one word. “I’m feening for you.”
2. 112: Cupid. This song epitomizes why I always believe in love. It’s a simple song, asking you to trust your heart and believe in love. It’s one of my sing out loud songs when it comes on the radio.
3. Tyrese: Lately. Okay, I’ve loved Tyrese since he sang “Always, Coca Cola” on the back of that bus, so it’s no surprise that I’d completely swoon when he asked the question “Lately, have I told you I love you?”
4. R. Kelley: The entire 12 play album. There were so many baby making songs on this album! Bump and Grind, Seems Like Your Ready, Your Body’s Calling Me and 12 Play. I have no doubt that many of us 90’s children have brothers, sisters, cousins or whatever made when this album dropped.
5. Bryan McKnight: Still in Love. One of my favorite love songs, hands down! Bryan McKnight has so many wonderful love songs, but to me this one speaks of undying everlasting love. I’m singing, eyes closed and swaying whenever it plays.
6. Silk: Freak Me. What can I say, but my poor pre-adolescent hormones went haywire when this song came out. Memories of being on the phone with a guy I was crushing on with this playing in the background are strong when I hear this song.
7. Joe: All the Things. I don’t condone cheating, but if you’re in an unhappy relationship and a guy steps correct with this song playing, I can see how a person may decide to be out with the old and in with the new. Just sayin.
8. Boys II Men: I’ll Make Love to You. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a man telling you he’ll make love to you and hold you tight? Too many love songs nowadays are only about having sex, but don’t include the important cuddling afterward.
9. Blackstreet: Before I Let You Go. Perfect make up song. How can you resist melting in your man’s arms after a fight if this is playing in the background?
10. Jagged Edge: I Gotta Be. I love this song so much it is in my first novel. When Malcolm realized that Kenyatta was the one for him and he wanted to be in her life the words of this song described his feelings completely.
That’s my list, and it is by no means all-inclusive of the great love songs of the 90’s. For instance, I stuck with R&B and my favorite love song (Bryan was one of my favorites) is Bryan Adams, Everything I Do I Do it For You. That was my wedding song 🙂 So, please comment and tell me your favorite baby making song of the 90’s.
Now you know this just took me way back to the best of times, lol. How ’bout I’ve been playing Jodeci A LOT lately–so hilarious.
And you ain’t NEVUH lied about them not making R&B like they used to. In fact, I salute you for giving Trey Songz credit, ’cause I ain’t even fidna do that–this music is jacked up on stank’n grind more than half the time. Umph.
Of this whole list though–Cupid and Before I Let You Go are my absolute favorite time capsule jams. Dr. Pepper lip gloss and kisses right there. Woo.
I give Trey Sonz credit for decent baby making music, but there are too few who include love in their lyrics. So sad that music today leaves that out. I’ve been on a 90s trip a lot lately and can relate to the constant playing of Jodeci.
I love Bryan Adams Everything I do!! It’s one of my inspiration songs when I don’t know what I want to do with a character. Plus it played a strong role in a story which will probably never see the light of day…I still think of those characters when the song plays. Did you see this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo Great 90’s stuff!
Oh Abby, how I love you for that link! My day has been made 🙂
I still have “I Gotta Be” on my playlist when I write! LOL…and oh man, R.Kelly’s “Your Body’s CallingMe”, that will never get old. I swear that’s how my first child got here! These young R&B singers can’t do like R.Kelly did and need to stop trying. Gotta go find me a copy of that song now! Great post!
Lol, love it! Thanks, MJ!
